Reviewer: Daniel C Huddle, D.O. (University of Colorado Health Sciences Center)
Description: This comprehensive book on cranio-spinal angiography encompasses both functional and angiographic anatomy with correlative diagrams, surgical specimens, and charts. This new version includes 3D-angiography for more precise illustration of angiographic pathology.
Purpose: The authors' intent is to integrate functional/neurosurgical anatomy with angiographic neuroanatomy. Their goal is to share information they feel is useful to the performance of endovascular surgery. The need for such book is warranted, as evidenced by the rapid growth in the number of those performing endovascular neurosurgery. The objectives set forth by the authors are clearly met.
Audience: The target audience includes neurosurgeons, neurointerventionalists, and neuroradiologists. The detailed and comprehensive nature of this book make it most suitable for practicing neurosurgeons or neurointerventionalists who have a solid knowledge of neuroangiography. This is not an introductory level text for the neurosciences and would not be suitable for medical students. The authors are credible, highly regarded authorities on this subject.
Features: This is a detailed review of both cranial and spinal neuroangiography. The book is organized in such a way that a particular anatomic region is discussed (e.g., craniocervical junction, skull base) rather than specific vessels. Included are both normal and variants of normal within these sections. This is particularly well outlined in the skull base and maxillofacial chapter. Correlations between angiograms, diagrams, and color photos of surgical specimens are invaluable for demonstrating various pathologies. This is a unique feature for a book on this subject.
Assessment: This book is clearly one of the most comprehensive and detailed publications on this subject. It is regarded by most neurointerventionalists as one of the, if not THE, definitive book. The quality is superb, including state-of-the-art imaging (3D angiography) and color surgical specimen correlates. Such additions clearly warrant publication of this updated version.
